The vineyard of the Rhone Valley (in French, vignoble de la vallée du Rhône) is a French wine region that stretches from Vienne in the North to Arles in the South. It is divided into two regions:
Northern Rhone, (from Vienne to Valence)
Southern Rhone (from Montélimar to Arles)
The production area is 73,000 hectares.
The average annual production is 3.5 million hectoliters (465 million bottles) and comes from 7000 farms, the average surface area of each being 10 ha. Only 2000 of these farms are private wineries; the others are grouped into cooperatives.
The Côtes-du-Rhône appellation, created by a 1937 decree, is spread over 44,000 hectares in six departments (Rhone, Loire, Vaucluse, Drôme, Ardèche and Gard).
The name "Côtes-du-Rhône-villages", created by a decree of 1966, affects 95 municipalities in the geographical area of Drôme, Vaucluse, Gard and Ardèche.
