Vino de Pago is a type of Spanish Protected Designation of Origin for wines that guarantees the origin of the grapes and wine from a specific pago (place or rural site) with specific edaphic characteristics. That is, when a particular microclimate and composition of the terrain exist in a specific farm or land that differentiates it and distinguishes it from other areas of its environment.

This geographical indication is regulated by Law 6/2015, of May 12, on Denominations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications of supra-autonomous territory, which in its third additional provision stipulates that all wines subject to this denomination must meet the following requirements : 1

The payment must be within a protected Denomination of Origin.
The payment must be known with a name traditionally linked to the cultivation of the vineyards from which the wine is obtained and whose maximum extension may not be equal to or greater than that of any of the municipalities in whose territory it is located.
In the event that the entire payment is included in the territorial scope of a qualified denomination of origin, it may receive the name of qualified payment wine as long as it proves that it meets the requirements for wines of the qualified denomination of origin.
Payment wines will be made and bottled by the natural or legal persons who hold the ownership of the vineyards located in the payment, in wineries located in the vicinity of the payment.
All the grapes that are destined for the payment wine must come from vineyards located in the determined payment and the wine must be elaborated, stored and aged separately from other wines.
In the production of payment wines, a comprehensive quality system will be implemented, which will be applied from the production of the grapes to the placing on the market of the wines.
Each paid wine must have a management body, subject to the legislation of the autonomous communities.
